The Effect of Cytotoxic Drugs on the Nitroblue Tetrazolium Reduction Test in the Malignant Diseases

Abstract
In order to evaluate the neutrophil function of the patients with various malignant diseases during the anticancer chemotherapy, the effect of cytotoxic drugs on the spontaneous nitroblue tetrazolium(NBT) reduction test in peripheral neutrophils was determined.
The NBT score after administration of cytotoxic drugs in the acute myelocytic group(12 cases) showed significant reduction from 31.8¡¾23.8% to 18.3+19.1% (p<0.05), while those of malignant lymphoma (12 cases) and solid cancer groups { 15 cases) did not.
In the acute myelocytic leukemia group, the absolute count of peripheral neutrophils and NBT positive neutrophils resulted in remarkable decrease after treatment from 6.275¡¾9.280/mm3 to 3.024+5.576/XX3 and from 1.725 ¡¾2.935/=3 to 159¡¾92/=3 respectively. In the lymphoma and solid cancer groups, however, there were no significant variations.
Among all patients with malignant diseases, particularly with acute myelocytic leukemia, the NBT score after chemotheraphy was more significantly depressed in the partial and complete remission groups than in the remission failure group (p<0.05).
